As we did in 2023, Team AMSG met at Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture for a day of volunteering. Located in Alexandria, Virginia, Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture is a nonprofit organization that works to create more equitable and sustainable local food sources in the Washington, D.C. area. Earlier this month, the AMSG team had the opportunity to engage with our community by visiting Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture, where we spent the day volunteering alongside their skilled team to advance their mission of sustainable agriculture and local food production.

Our day began with a guided tour during which we explored the farm’s innovative agricultural practices and sampled the fresh, seasonal produce. Located on the historic grounds of Woodlawn Estate in Alexandria, Virginia, Arcadia Farm operates under a landmark partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This unique setting enhances our appreciation for the farm’s commitment to preserving both history and the environment. We were particularly impressed by the variety of crops being grown, including heirloom tomatoes, vibrant greens, and delicious okra that we later harvested. The knowledgeable staff shared insights into the importance of cutting back vines to promote healthier growth and how each practice contributes to a more sustainable farming model.

Afterward, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work, contributing to several farm projects that were crucial for maintaining the health and productivity of the land. We participated in creating pollination beds designed to attract beneficial insects, which play a vital role in the farm’s ecosystem. These efforts not only support the local environment but also enhance the viability of local farmers by increasing crop yields and biodiversity.

To end this wonderful day, we enjoyed a delightful meal featuring fresh, seasonal produce straight from the farm. The flavors were incredible, and it was a heartwarming reminder of the power of collaboration and the joy of coming together to support local initiatives. Sharing this meal with fellow volunteers and the dedicated Arcadia team allowed us to reflect on the meaningful work being done to improve public health through equitable access to better food and to preserve the environment for future generations.

As we left, we felt inspired by Arcadia’s vision to cultivate vibrant local food systems that prioritize health, equity, and sustainability. Our experience underscored the importance of community engagement in supporting such vital initiatives and the transformative power of local food systems.
