My name is Joel Lamar Koon III, and my life has been a tapestry of service, adventure, and resilience, both in civilian and military life. My journey has taken me to 49 countries, and I’ve had the privilege of experiencing extraordinary moments that have shaped who I am today.

Born in Schwabisch Hall, Germany, I’ve always had a deep appreciation for diverse cultures and languages. Although not Filipino, I speak Tagalog fluently, a skill that has enriched my interactions with those of other backgrounds. My identical twin brother, Jon, also served in Army Special Operations, and we share a bond forged through shared experiences and mutual respect. Early in my military career, I spent five years in a sniper section and trained as a paratrooper. I also attended Special Forces survival school, known as SERE, at Camp Mackall, and later became a Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape instructor for the U.S. military, serving in Afghanistan from 2012 to 2013.

While deployed to Nepal for six months, one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life occurred on my birthday in April 2023: I walked right into a wild tiger—a moment that was both humbling and awe-inspiring. Also in Nepal, my team and I accomplished the incredible feat of climbing Mount Everest, though we did not summit. My Army years also included an equestrian aspect when I both rode and competed in rodeos, a passion that continues to resonate. After dedicating 16 years to the United States Army, including time in special operations, I medically retired from the military on March 20, 2025.

My love for adventure has also led me to dog sledding in Northern Finland within the Arctic Circle and kitesurfing, which remains one of my favorite hobbies. I’ve even participated in American Revolutionary War reenactments, riding horses and performing cavalry charges down historic battlefields.

After retiring from the military, I’ve embraced a quieter yet fulfilling life in southern Alabama, where I enjoy living on a lake, working on my property, and spending time at my beach house. My time as a ranch hand, pushing cattle from one pasture to another on horseback, has instilled in me a love for the outdoors and a strong work ethic. I’m also the proud father of a 10-year-old boy and a dedicated Boy Scout leader for his troop, Troop 150.

In December 2025, I embarked on a new chapter by joining AMSG as a SharePoint developer. Transitioning to civilian life and a corporate environment has been a significant change, but I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to work for such an amazing company. The team at AMSG has been incredibly accommodating and patient, mentoring me as I learn and grow in my new role. Their support has made the transition seamless and rewarding.

AMSG’s commitment to excellence and its focus on charity work resonate deeply with me. Having circumnavigated the globe three times, I’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by communities in need. I hope to contribute to AMSG’s charitable initiatives and continue traveling to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

As I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude—for the experiences I’ve had, the people I’ve met, and the opportunities that lie ahead. Joining AMSG has been a blessing, and I look forward to contributing to the company’s mission while continuing to explore the world and share my stories.
