Our partnership with the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation and the creation of AMSG’s Student Mentorship Program began 2 years ago. It is designed to support student scholarship winners for one year, providing guidance and assistance to answer any questions they may have. This program pairs experienced mentors with mentees, offering essential guidance, support, and accountability. It emphasizes both personal and professional growth, helping the mentee fully realize their career potential.
Mentoring holds deep significance because it sparks a ripple effect that positively impacts individuals, organizations, and society as a whole. For mentees, it accelerates personal and professional growth by providing valuable guidance, real-world insights, and supportive feedback, boosting confidence and expanding professional connections. Mentors also benefit, finding fulfillment in helping others succeed, sharpening their leadership skills, and gaining fresh perspectives. This robust exchange fosters a culture of continuous learning, knowledge sharing, and talent development, ultimately creating stronger, more adaptable individuals and communities that are better equipped to face the future.
AMSG’s Sandy Magura shares her phenomenal mentoring experience:
“Mikaela and I were paired up back in August 2024 when she applied to the program following her success in winning a scholarship from the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. Mikaela, a senior majoring in Communications, aligned perfectly with my own major and career trajectory. Despite the geographical distance between us, as I reside in Virginia and she is in Ohio, we have managed to coordinate our meetings, which are typically held every month. These meetings take place over Teams or via phone calls.
Our initial meeting served as an introduction, during which we delved into Mikaela’s areas of interest. Subsequent meetings revolved around the topic of internships and their significance. I provided guidance in her internship search, assisting her in researching opportunities and refining her application materials. After she identified several positions of interest, we collaborated on enhancing her resume. Within a few weeks, Mikaela excitedly informed me that she had successfully secured an internship for the upcoming summer (which by the end of the school year turned into employment).
Mikaela’s receptiveness to our discussions and her proactive approach in implementing my advice are truly commendable. It’s gratifying to play a part in supporting a college student like Mikaela as she embarks on her journey towards achieving great things.”
As Sandy’s reflection highlights, mentoring is more than just teaching; it’s a reciprocal relationship that drives personal and professional growth for everyone involved. When we nurture mentorship within organizations, schools, and communities, we help individuals reach their full potential while building a more connected and empowered society. Embracing the transformative impact of mentorship creates a future where knowledge, guidance, and inspiration are shared freely across generations.
AMSG remains honored to be part of this incredible program and looks forward to many more years of partnership with the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.
