In today’s competitive business environment, organizations are increasingly recognizing the value of supporting veteran employees through a Veteran Resource Group (VRG). Establishing an organizational VRG brings a range of benefits for veterans themselves, as well as the entire workforce and organization. Consider how a VRG can lead to the following benefits:
Tapping into Experience and Leadership Skills: Veterans bring a wealth of experience to the workplace, shaped by their military service. Through their time in the armed forces, they acquire skills such as leadership, teamwork, discipline, and problem-solving under pressure; qualities that are invaluable in any business setting. A VRG allows these veterans to share their expertise with colleagues, fostering an environment where their leadership potential is fully realized.
Enhancing Employee Engagement and Retention: By offering a community where veterans connect with one another, the company fosters a sense of belonging and purpose. This sense of inclusion can significantly improve employee engagement and retention. Veterans who feel supported by their employer are more likely to stay with the company long-term. Furthermore, a strong VRG will help attract top talent from the veteran community, a demographic that is highly skilled, loyal, and dedicated.
Improving Employer Brand and Corporate Social Responsibility: Companies that actively support veterans not only benefit internally but also enhance their reputation externally. Being recognized as a veteran-friendly employer boosts the company’s brand, positioning it as a socially responsible organization that values the contributions of veterans. This attracts customers, clients, and partners who prioritize supporting veterans and military families.
Enhancing Innovation and Problem-Solving: Veterans often come from high-stress, dynamic environments where innovation and creative problem-solving are essential. Their experience in adapting to rapidly changing situations and thinking on their feet can bring fresh ideas and innovative solutions to a business. A VRG serves as a platform for veterans to contribute their creative insights, which will enhance product development, process improvement, and customer service strategies.
Strengthening Community Relationships: A VRG creates opportunities for the company to give back to the veteran community. Through partnerships with veteran organizations, volunteering, and participation in veteran-related events, the company contributes to the broader mission of supporting veterans and their families.
AMSG has long advocated for and supported veteran causes, and in 2024 the company formalized the AMSG VRG to build a sense of community among AMSG veterans, their families, and those that support them. Since then, the company has sponsored, coordinated, and taken part in a variety of events designed to connect and encourage our veteran team members, as well as providing them with valuable opportunities to help each other and in their communities.
As we transition into 2025, the AMSG VRG calendar is quickly filling up with VRG-sponsored events such as battlefield tours, networking events, holiday celebrations, and community service projects designed to recognize and celebrate veterans’ service. Companies looking to strengthen their commitment to their veterans may consider creating a VRG and realizing first-hand the benefits that it can provide – to the veteran, the workforce, and the organization.
