AMSG provides support for a wide variety of missions, and one of the most satisfying is helping service members who are ill or have been injured to successfully transition to new careers and opportunities. One of these programs is Operation Warfighter (OWF), an internship program developed by the Department of Defense for convalescing service members to assist in their transition back into the workforce. AMSG’s James West is an Employment & Education Initiative (E2I) and OWF Regional Coordinator, and he brought us the story of Damon Glover. Damon Glover is a Veteran transitioning from the US Army to civilian life. AMSG is proud to support our Veterans and the programs that assist them in moving from a life of military service to fulfilling Careers. Here is a brief article from Damon about how it’s going so far.
I obtained the ICE Internship through the TAP (Transition Assistance Program) at Fort Drum. After speaking with a representative at the TAP office, I was connected to Mr. James West, an OWF representative, who helped me find the right internship for me and guided me through the application process.
Initially, I was interested in interning with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). However, when I applied in January, I was informed that internship opportunities were limited at the start of the new year but expected to pick up shortly thereafter.
In late February, I was contacted by the Unit Chief for the ICE Sexual Abuse and Assault Prevention and Intervention (SAAPI) section through Mr. West, who inquired about my interest in their program. After completing the interview process and passing the background check, I was selected to join the program.
This particular branch of ICE is highly complex and constantly evolving to keep up with changing standards and best practices. While there are safeguards and parameters in place to prevent abuse and misconduct within the system, there are still too many incidents, both staff-to-detainee and detainee-to-detainee, that occur or go unreported for various reasons.
This has been a valuable and eye-opening experience. I truly appreciate everything that Mr. West and the OWF program have done for me. If given the opportunity, I would be honored to continue working with this agency to contribute to its mission and support the important work being done in this field.
